My students are curious learners, constantly asking questions, digging deeper, and trying to understand the world around them. They seek meaning rather than just comprehension, and are willing to do the work to get there. As an Environmentally focused school, my students are also always on the lookout for better ways to keep our planet and ourselves healthier.
These are kids who care; they care about the world around them and how their actions impact more than just themselves.
When an answer isn't simple or straight-forward, we learn how to use science in order to gather information and make positive changes for our school, community, and the environment.
My Project
Winter is tough for everyone. For staff, teachers, students, and... honey bees. For the humans at our school, long cold months require bundling up and staying active. For the resident honey bees, hunkering down is the chosen strategy for survival. But how do they do this? How do bees (which are tropical by origin) survive a sub-zero Minnesota winter? These are some of the most common questions I get as the beekeeper and naturalist at our school, and with a thermal imaging camera, we can literally "spy on the hive".
Just because the temperatures outside will dip well below freezing, doesn't mean that our outdoor learning has to stop.
Throughout the winter we will use the thermal imaging camera to see the location of the colony in the hive. This will answer basic questions like if the colony is alive or not, and will also give more detailed information regarding the location of the colony inside the hive, allowing us to know if they're low on food stores, and to be able to rescue a hive that's in danger of starving.
This information will be vital in order to bring our colony through the winter successfully. And not only will it allow us to overwinter the hives, but our students will be given the opportunity to analyze and track real world data, with the additional opportunity to apply their findings. As an environmentally focused STEM School, this hands-on project will be a unique and hands-on method to demonstrate their understanding in all core subjects: science, technology, engineering, and math. Not only to demonstrate, but more importantly to apply this knowledge.
