Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My Students

The PK-2 students at TCCS absolutely LOVE coming to the Library.

They are energetic, passionate, thoughtful, kind, and most of all, resilient. Our students love reading and choosing all sorts of exciting books to share with friends and to check out. Our library is housed in a classroom that was filled with tables and chair - making it hard to get cozy during reading time. Making a space that is engaging and fun would make them even more excited about coming to the Library and enter our inviting world of books.

Our School is located in West Harlem (Title 1 District).

Our student population is diverse and includes, Hispanic, African American, Caucasian, Asian (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian), Biracial, ENL (English as a New Language), IEP (Individualized Education Program) students. Diversity within our school is something we embrace and nurture.

My Project

Flexible seating is of the utmost importance in a classroom as it elevates student engagement - students learn best when they feel at ease in their learning environment. A flexible space will give students choice in what learning spaces work best for them and allow them to try those out. In turn, students can work more collaboratively and engage in more complex work.

Flexible classrooms allow their learners to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow and core strength.

Flexible seating helps students gain greater flexibility and control of their surroundings - this helps build autonomy, builds higher motivation and academic performance, and improves overall behavior. Additionally, it allows students to advocate and make choices for themselves as learners, which will benefit them for years to come!
