Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our Community School is located in urban New Brunswick, New Jersey. Our school offers an Environmental/Gardening Club for students in grades 3 through 8. Members participate in various activities focused on gardening and environmental stewardship. The school features a courtyard where fruits and vegetables are grown in raised beds. Fortunately, we have a storage shed for materials that we need for the garden, conveniently located within the school premises. Additionally, there is a greenhouse on the school grounds that the Environmental/Gardening Club can utilize for their project. The purpose of the club is to create a sustainable garden where they can grow their food.

Greenspaces play a vital role in people's lives.

Given that our community is situated in an inner city, finding areas to grow plants can be quite challenging which is why the students get the opportunity to work hands-on with nature. The students love to work in the garden growing vegetables and learning about the life of a plant. The club meets every two weeks and during the meetings, the students get the chance to work with nature and take care of the garden by watering the plants and cleaning the environment. Flowers and plants enhance the environment but also uplift the moods of the people in our community. The Environmental/Gardening Club actively plants flowers at the school’s entrance to create a welcoming and attractive atmosphere for staff, students, and visitors.

In the past, the Environmental/Gardening Club has been fortunate to receive supplies from the local Buy Nothing group; however, there is a need for additional items to support our ongoing efforts. The fact that the school is situated in a low-income neighborhood donations are necessary to make a difference in the lives of the students.
