My Students

My students face challenges on an everyday basis and unfortunately these challenges will always be there. To find a skill, that is functional, that can serve themselves and others, and are able to do and be good at, is something I as a teacher need to bring into my classroom as often as possible.

I work in a NYC DOE District 75 school, meaning all of the students are severely disabled, either physically or intellectually.

It is a high school/ occupational training center which is solely geared toward post graduation (21 years old). The students involved in this project are from two classes of students with autism. This group is made up of 12 amazing teenagers. They are 14-17 year old students on the autism spectrum, each with their own unique personalities, likes, dislikes, and love for learning. Our students constantly surprise us with their kindness and understanding of the human condition. They are learning to better interact with others and express themselves in positive ways to prevent frustration and increase communication. In these classes, independence is constantly encouraged, and we want that to continue by helping support their beautiful idea of making sandwiches and other food for a local food pantry and giving it to the needy.

My Project

I am requesting funding to supply our students with food items and materials needed to make and package sandwiches for them to deliver to a local food pantry. The original project "Spreading The Love" was created by my fellow teacher, Ms. Osorio and funded by generous donors earlier this year. She and I took that opportunity to create a program in our school that fulfills many aspects of a truly functional curriculum. We teach financial literacy by creating shopping lists and budgeting costs. Our students learn and develop essential life skills such as making sandwiches, shopping, the use of public transportation and again financial literacy by paying for products and making/getting change. Through this program we also teach the concept of helping others and what it means to be a good person and citizen. I am asking Tony and Nanar Yoseloff to help fund this project because among all the other positive aspects this project contains, financial literacy is one of the most important.

This project is so important for our students because it encompasses so many functional life skills.

As teachers to these students, our main goal is to provide instruction and experiences to increase their independence. Independence is different to every student and this program provides the differentiation: whether it's making sandwiches, using public transportation or shopping at a supermarket. Please help us achieve that goal. I again ask for the generous support of Tony and Nanar Yoseloff.
