Spreading Compassion Through Art!

My Project

My students are varied in age from kindergarten through fifth grade. I work in a self contained special education room. We learn A LOT of life skills and social and emotional lessons, especially by using art to visualize their actual feelings as the majority of them are non verbal. This project is going to help my students create a piece of art that tells the story of someone else's life, or their own life, and how they are feeling by using visual elements to convey emotions, struggles, and compassion. They will be able to use the play doh, kinetic sand, and the foam modeling beads to create scenes of emotions, etc. Through art-making, students can develop empathy and understanding for others' experiences by creating art that represents the stories of communities, themselves, and other students. This will allow them to see the world through other peoples eyes as all art is different and personable!

I am excited to teach them how to help other's through this project.

We will read the emotions book and learn how we are able to help someone based on their emotion. We will use the class set of markers, the paint set, and the paint brushes to be able to draw our emotions out for everyone to see. We will measure success in the students understanding of compassion by observing the kids behavior when interacting with peers. A good way to track this is with the cards set for nurturing emotional intelligence. Our students would truly benefit from this project and we thank you so much for allowing them this opportunity!
