My Students

"The belly rules the mind," a proverb gracing the placard entering my culinary classroom, rings especially true with my students. Lights, Camera, Action! We're geared up to document our edible adventures imparting sweet/savory solutions to some weighty issues of food insecurity & nutrition on film.

My culinary kids are aspiring chefs, and we want to start a YouTube channel to document and showcase our deliciously nutritious meals.

We will utilize techniques garnered from our school garden and kitchen classroom, which will promote healthy eating habits both of which are obtainable, affordable, and kid-approved. Our school is an inner-city Title I school in the shadows of downtown, where 40% of our students are homeless. We serve breakfast, lunch, and now dinner to 100% of our students for FREE, as well as provide backpacks of non-perishable food items for the weekends. Food security is a real issue for our kids as it is with 48.1 million Americans. Access to fresh produce is scare, and many times out of reach monetarily for our families. We have installed a fabulous 18-bed edible garden, a small orchard, and chickens to provide eggs to support our culinary arts/garden program. We teach and promote fresh food sustainability and security, and our kids are hungry for more.

My Project

Starting a YouTube channel will allow for us to share our edible adventures through film and photo documentation. Students will be able to create and produce webisodes of garden and culinary techniques, as well as food stories, through technology garnered from this donation opportunity. Parents will be able to replicate dishes showcased in class to cook with their children and in-turn, impact their families’ nutrition. Families and the viewing web community learn how to have a small container garden to grow and harvest seasonal organic produce at home. Students will be able to develop technology, communication, advertising and marketing skills, while developing webisodes and photos promoting healthful habits from a child's perspective. The student-generated webisodes and photos will be a product of their learning and provide a voice for them to showcase problem-solving solutions to weighty issues impacting their lives, such as food insecurity and proper nutrition.

Donations affording us a quality film-making camera will allow us to become filmmakers, providing a powerful tool to promote grass-root social change.

It will empower students to create visual content, to share their ideas about food and how it impacts every aspect of ones' life, all the while allowing them to translate what they have learned in class into real life experiences they can share with the world.
