My Students

Can you remember the pride you felt as a child when you were able to do something all by yourself? No help from your parents. No help from your teachers. Well, doing independent work is something that my students struggle with.

My students have Autism and Intellectual Disabilities which make it difficult for them to work independently.

They often rely heavily on their teachers or when left to complete their work tasks, they will often just sit and twiddle their thumbs. I have implemented the TEACCH method of independent work stations for each student. Paired with visual supports and a least to most method of prompting the students are learning to work independently. However, some of my students are getting tired of the same old tasks. They are a smart bunch of kids and are steadily mastering the work tasks faster than I can create or buy them.

My Project

I want my students to experience the pride of completing challenging work tasks independently. The impact this has on their self-esteem is so powerful. By providing our class with the Common Core Math Centers and Language Arts Centers, my higher functioning students will be exposed to, and challenged with more rigorous tasks. The centers come with several activities for each of the Core Standards, giving them a variety of activities to work on.

I look forward to being able to challenge my students with the Common Core Math and Language Arts Centers.

I know my students will be so excited to see the new materials. My students will be able to experience the pride of completing more challenging work tasks independently.
