My Project

My English Language Learners have embarked on an exploration of the Industrial Revolution. As we began to learn about the development of the textile industry, it became clear that most of them are not familiar with the vocabulary of spinning and weaving.

I would like to give my students the opportunity to try a little weaving and knitting during a Centers Day in our classroom with looms and knitting needles.

Students at one station will be able to try weaving with a hand loom before comparing that activity with the weaving made possible by steam engine powered weaving machines. I will sit with my students to help them learn to knit a few stitches. We will again compare our output with what mechanized factories were able to produce. We have a few hand spindles in the classroom. The raw wool will be available for students who want to try spinning yarn.
