Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are inspiring to me! They are inquisitive, creative, respectful and eager to learn. The main demographic group is Hispanic, and most of the students are economically disadvantaged. Our school is located in the southeast corner of Houston. Many of the students are English language learners. Most of the reading materials provided for these students are mainly cold reads of nonfiction passages designed to prepare them for standardized tests, so it's not surprising that many of them find reading boring. Our ninth grade team encourages our students to see books as a way to find out more about themselves and to see into the world and emotions of others.

My Project

Our ninth grade English team regularly teaches our students the classics, but this year we wanted to include an interesting novel into the mix of our reading materials. This book will provide our students with an experience that we can discuss and learn from together through a variety of activities, as well as offer something they can relate to since the novel reflects their culture. It is my hope that you will please join me in helping my students feel encouraged and supported by providing a class set of a novel that they will find interesting and at the same time enjoy a unique reading opportunity that is contemporary and realistic.
