My students need alphabet teaching tubs, activity mats, and puppets that will help their learning come alive--making it interactive!

My Students
This group of young students has been working on developing their proficiency in English through literacy. They love music, movement, and hands on activities! I'm always amazed at how a simple visual can provide a bridge that helps even students who are just beginning to learn English. Research has also shown that having real-life objects is of great benefit to ELL students. My students would be so surprised and excited if I was able to show up to small group with any of these materials in hand.
My Project
The story glove and puppet sets provide a visual way for student see the stories outside of the book. In addition they can practice their English speaking skills in retelling the stories. We can use the action mats as tools for brain breaks and also using them to sequence activities. They would also let us build verbal and written sentences about what students are doing.
Finally, the alphabet tubs provide a great visual for students who are just learning English and becoming familiar with our alphabet and alphabet sounds.
We can compare the names of the objects to their native language to look for similarities and differences. These would be great as an introduction tool in addition to a review tool or choosing objects for students to describe or write about.
Lower elementary is a critical time when early literacy foundations need to develop. Many of our ELL students come to us in these grade levels. Through the use of these supplies, students can actively participate in what we are learning.
