My Students

My students are ready and eager to learn. We are a Title I school with 100% of the students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Our students come from a rural community with parents who want them to succeed and the best for them in life. My students are in first grade.

We enjoy learning in a nontraditional environment and using technology to explore the world around us.

My students are excited and love the opportunity to explore the world around them. They have been learning to work collaboratively and how to find solutions to real-world problems.

My Project

My students believe that all you have to do to buy something is swipe a card. They don't understand that there is money that backs that purchase up. This project is to teach my students the value of working hard and earning money as well as how to make decisions about spending the money they earned.

This project will allow me to introduce my students to financial literacy through games and activities.

The Teachers Pay Teachers gift card is to purchase financial literacy games and activities that can be printed. These games will help my students to understand the different bills and coins in our economy as well as how to make decisions about spending and saving.

The card stock will allow me to print out the games and the binder envelopes are to store them for students to use. We will also use a classroom economy system. This system will be partly digital and partly hands on. Students will earn money for completing their jobs in the classroom such as coming to school and doing homework. They will also earn bonuses for helping extra at school. Students will be allowed to keep their "cash" play money or deposit it into their bank. We will utilize an online program to keep up with their bank account balance. The Mimioteach interactive board will allow us to do this whole group in front of the class. Once a week, the classroom store will open and students can purchase items. These items include tangible items as well as classroom reward coupons. It will be up to the student if they want to save or spend their money.

The goal of this project is to help students make the connection between work and money as well as between money and goods. Thank you!
