My Project

Students with speech needs play a critical role in the school setting, as communication is key to their academic achievement and social development. Many young learners struggle with producing accurate "R" sounds and overcoming lateralized "S" sounds, which are notoriously challenging for both Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) and their students. These difficulties can lead to frustration and impede progress in crucial areas like reading and writing.

To better support these students, I propose the development of comprehensive S and R Toolkits.

These kits will equip school-based SLPs with the essential skillset, materials, and visuals necessary to address these persistent speech sound challenges. By enhancing speech sound development, particularly in PK-1 students, we lay the groundwork for literacy success. Accurate production of sounds like "S" and "R" directly influences phonemic awareness, letter-sound correspondence, vocabulary growth, sound-symbol connections, and students' confidence to actively participate in classroom activities.

I am requesting funding to acquire the necessary materials to create these toolkits, which will provide invaluable support for speech development and early literacy growth. With this grant, we can directly improve communication skills, fostering both academic and social success for students in the earliest stages of their education.
