This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are hardworking, enthusiastic about speech therapy and learning. Many of the students that receive therapy are in special education classes with varying disabilities. The therapy that I provide is individualized and modified to each student's needs. Some students receive therapy in groups while others receive therapy individually.
My students needs are individualized and vary based on their specific speech and language deficits.
I provide therapy for students who have a diagnosis of Autism, Emotionally Disturbed, Expressive and Receptive Language delays, Social and Pragmatic delays, stuttering and speech sound disorders. Everyday I am learning from their strengths and weaknesses and everyday I am feel more motivated to provide the best therapy for my students because of their hard work.
My Project
Implementing technology such as an iPad in my session will help me to address all of my students needs at the same time. Most days I see 3 students at a time in a group. However each student in my therapy session is working on different things. For example, one student is working on producing the /k/ and /g/ sound, another students is working on following multistep directions and my third student is working on creating complete sentences using supporting details. Providing my students with iPads will allow them, to work on their specific goals in my session. There are so many articulation apps, reading apps etc. that can address my students needs. This will allow me as the speech therapist to specifically monitor progress and design my lessons to individually meet each of my students needs so that they can achieve their speech and language goals.
My students are young and range from the 3k to 1st and soon to be 2nd grade.
They were born into a world where technology was given to them at such a young age. Many of them learn best with a hands on mulitsensory approach of being able to touch, visualize, and hear. Providing them with iPads during my therapy sessions allows them to have access to this type of approach.
Ipads have become so useful to them in the classroom. My goal is to be able to create, learn and master specific skills in the speech room and transfer those skills in to their classroom setting. Providing my students with the same type of technology that is used in their classroom setting will not only give them an extra opportunity to learn and navigate through a world that relies on technology so much but to also reach their goals!
