This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Long, long ago speech-language pathologists around the world were forced to carry tons and tons of articulation cards, story books, and AAC devices across the school and into different classrooms. This may sound like a fairy tale story to you; however, this is still relevant for our school today.
My students are in preschool to eighth grade.
They are happy, hard-working students that attend a charter school in an urban neighborhood in Massachusetts. Many of my students have communication impairments, specific learning disability, or auditory processing disorder.
Having a device like this will allow myself and my colleagues to purchase specific applications for the Pad that will be helpful when working with specific students. Having an Pad will also help us by decreasing preparation time for speech-language therapy sessions. Examples of things that we could put on the Pad include: 1) Articulation cards- Rather than carrying around tons of speech sound decks, we can use Articulation Station, an app that includes all speech sounds AND and audio recording device that gives auditory feedback 2) Story books- A virtual library is not only enjoyable to kids, but also convenient 3) AAC device- Some of our students on the autism spectrum have difficulty communicating basic wants and needs. An Pad has the ability to serve as an alternative communication device in order to help our students communicate better.
Technology is very motivating for students that come from families and areas that can't afford many things that we take for granted (smart phones, iPods, etc.).
Also, donations will help us provide more enjoyment to our speech-language students' sessions. Whether our students have difficulties with speech sounds, putting together sentences, or reading, this item will help all of our students communicate better in the classroom.
