Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in a public school in the Bronx with an incredible and diverse group of middle school learners. The majority of my students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, receive free lunch, and lack exposure and resources that can help them grow to be college and career ready. Although many of them fall in the lowest one-third for reading and math in the city and state, they yearn to be taught skills and strategies to stay on a path for success.

Despite their backgrounds and any obstacles they face, my students come to school each and every day willing and ready to become the great leaders of tomorrow.

They need the support and engagement within the school classroom to help realize their true potential.

My Project

Our incredible middle school science students yearn for hands-on science experiences and labs. With these supplies we can incorporate more lab experiments, dissections, and engaging science lessons to help keep our students motivated on their paths to college and career readiness. With the Science Exam Kit, we are also working to ensure our students are prepared with appropriate supplies to master the NYS Grade 8 Science Practical.

With the addition of a triple-beam balance, timer, tweezers, beakers, and lab prep supplies, we can continue to build our middle school lab department.

We feel as a middle school science team, we can get our kids "hooked on science" by providing more hands-on experiences and allowing them to understand the content through active learning.

Many of our students lack exposure to the STEM field and we must provide them ample opportunity to develop inquiry and lab skills. In a society driven by technology, we have the duty as educators to instill in our students skills and techniques that will prepare them for successful futures.
