My Students

Do you remember learning basic language and communication skills? Probably not, that's because most of us learn these skills naturally through exposure. For students with language impairments, learning these skills requires specialized instruction and specialized materials at a variety of levels.

My students are endearing, eager to learn, and well behaved.

Unfortunately they have been found to have language impairments and are usually quiet, shy, and reluctant to participate in class and social situations due to their language impairments. Students with language impairments have difficulty learning to use and understand language the same way as typical developing children. Some students with language impairments struggle with learning and using new vocabulary, understanding how vocabulary words are related, using and understanding complex or simple sentence structures, understanding texts, answering questions, understanding figurative language, or even participating in conversations. My students also come from an urban community and don't always have access to language building experiences that other students their age do. Our school does its best to work with these struggling students; but we know we could do better with up to date materials to teach needed language skills

My Project

My students need the requested specialized language materials to learn specific language skills that they are lacking. Students who lack a basic vocabulary would be able to use noun, verb, and adjective picture cards to build a functional vocabulary. Students who have difficulty understanding relationships between words would be able to use antonym, synonym, association, and categories cards to help them organize their knowledge of vocabulary to help them learn new words and access them on demand. Students who have a difficult time using accurate detailed language would be able to use describing cards and sequencing stories to practice producing detailed descriptions needed for communication and writing. Students who have difficulty understanding non-literal language would be able to use figurative language cards to practice interpreting complex language they hear and read. Students who lack conversational skills would be able to use a conversation program to improve.

Understanding language and being able to communicate effectively are things that most of us take for granted on a daily basis.

Donations to this project will improve the instruction that the language impaired students get at my school so they can have a chance to be competent communicators and succeed academically and socially.
