My Project

Pretend play toys are powerful tools that help special education students develop critical skills in a way that feels fun and engaging. These toys encourage language development by prompting students to label items, answer questions like “What is this?” or “Who is doing this?”, and use complete sentences during play. They also foster cognitive skills such as identifying object functions, sorting by categories, and problem-solving through imaginative scenarios. Socially, pretend play toys allow students to practice sharing, turn-taking, and collaborative communication, while physically, they support fine motor skill development through manipulation of objects like pretend food, dolls, or tools. Additionally, these toys provide a safe space for students to explore emotions and learn self-regulation strategies, enhancing their emotional development.

The primary goal of this project is to create an enriched learning environment where students with special needs can thrive through hands-on, imaginative play.

By introducing pretend play toys, we aim to: Support students’ language and communication goals, such as answering 'who' and 'what' questions or using multi-word utterances. These tools will help students meet their IEP goals in a way that feels engaging and natural, fostering confidence and independence.

Our students are incredibly resilient and capable of growth when given the right tools and support. Each student brings a unique perspective and set of strengths to the classroom, from their imaginative ideas to their determination to communicate and connect with others. All of our students face challenges with communication, motor skills, and social interactions, but they show remarkable progress when learning is tailored to their abilities. These toys allow them to express themselves, learn in ways that suit their needs, and feel a sense of accomplishment.
