Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a special education teacher teaching in a Title 1 school in Staten Island in a self contained classroom. My classroom has a very unique mix of students representing a variety of linguistically diverse cultures, economic statuses, academic, physical and social needs. 100% of my students require more intensive intervention to help them reach their full potential.

In my classroom 40% of the students are diagnosed with ASD and require additional resources to help meet their needs.

Each child in my classroom absolutely loves learning, although the means in which they learn varies greatly. In order to meet their individual needs I incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating and student choice to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are!

My Project

The materials I am requesting will help engage my students by adapting their environment to meet their developmental needs in Mathematics and Reading. Research shows that there are many benefits when students engage in learning mathematics through hands on materials. Additionally studies have shown that incorporating a multi sensory approach when teaching phonics can help students develop the skills they need as developing readers

All of these tools from the rekenreks, jumbo ten frames, peg number boards and count and links will help me engage my students by giving them the freedom to choose how they will acquire a new or reinforced concept in Math.

The trace and write a letter, touch and reads kits and the reading trackers will help my students who need a little more support in reading by meeting their individual learning needs.

All the materials I have requested will help me create an environment appropriate for my students who have been diagnosed with ASD, Dyslexia, ADHD and Learning Disablities. All students are capable of learning, as teachers it is our job to find out how and what works best for them!
