My Students

7th and 8th grade can be an extremely challenging time both academically and personally, even more so when students lack the most basic school supplies. Students in my class have so much potential just waiting to be unlocked. As a teacher in a low-income school, I strive to ensure that my students are provided with an engaging and rigorous education that instills in them the passion to be lifelong learners.

Many of my students are designated Special Ed or ESOL and come from single-parent households.

Most of the textbooks in my classroom are as old as the students using them, and it shows. Because of this, most of what I teach comes directly from primary sources or other materials that I manipulate and copy for my students directly.

My Project

Technology is becoming ever more important in our world today and is changing the world around us. However, many of the students that I teach do not have access to technology outside of the classroom.

An iPad will greatly impact the way my students learn.

Students will be able to use the iPad to gain hands on experience during the lessons. In all of the classes that I teach there are students who are reading more than 3 or 4 years below grade level. This makes it almost impossible for these students to understand material that is on grade level. An iPad will allow those students to quickly look up unfamiliar words, listen to articles read aloud, and watch videos on the topic while still participating in the class.

Even students without special needs will benefit from a laptop in the classroom. Students will have access to technology that they otherwise wouldn’t at home. There are so many educational apps that will be helpful in the classroom including the National Archives Do teach, PBS Students, among many others. ESOL will have direction access to translation apps as well.
