Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is one of the four schools that actually teach about STEM, robotics, technology, computer programming, design and engineering in Middle School, and its the only Technology course offered in our Middle School. Our district is in a poor urban setting (90% living in poverty, more than 60% are minority). Students, when they hear about it, get really excited and curious and encouraged. There is a smaller faction which even what is provided they don't have access to. My students with cerebral palsy and cognitive developmental disorder. Their cognitive level is elementary, though physically are Middle School aged. My heart really goes out to them. My students need a way to experience STEM, despite having disabilities that effect hand-eye-coordination and/or cognitive challenges.

My Project

My goal is that students learn through play and hands on projects which include within the activity problem solving moments. I worked hard to build the classroom and received much help as well. Yet, there are a few students that have not been able to connect. There are many types of technology in my room which they have a hard time experiencing due to disabilities in which they have no control or choice over. I researched and found out that Cubetto helps disabled kids in learning programming. This device is for their level, enjoyable, easy, in which these specific students can use and learn a great amount in areas of problem solving, coding, programming, robotics, mapping, direction, and a whole series of technical things through play.
