This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend a highest poverty school in an inner city urban district. They have IEPs and sometimes are pulled for individual work but more often I push into their classroom.

They may be special needs students but they LOVE technology.

Often they have been my tutor when I can't figure out how to do something on the computer. They seem to be more receptive to completing work using a computer than with paper and pencil. Practicing multiplication or addition facts is more fun using a computer program.

Being a Special Education Lab we always seem to be the last in line to get any of the technology that the regular classrooms receive. And if there are not enough laptops to go around my students are the ones that have to share, look over someone's shoulder, or get bumped by a regular classroom if they need the full class set.

My Project

"I'm sorry, but your class will have to wait until 'testing, Benchmarks, class projects, regular classrooms' (ad nauseum) are finished using the Chromebooks". This is what I am faced with on a weekly basis. I hope to build a small Special Education Lab class size set of Chromebooks so my students don't have to wait on other classes to finish their projects.

These Chromebooks will even travel with them to their general education classrooms if needed.

They can start assignments in the classroom and then continue in Lab if they need more individualized, explicit help.

The general education teachers frequently give quizzes using the Chromebooks, and my students often need extended time or help to complete the quizzes. With a set of Chromebooks dedicated to the lab my students can complete the quizzes in lab and get the individualized help they need to finish the test. If they happen to be absent the day of a quiz or test they can make it up in lab; again with direct, explicit help if needed.

The push in Special Education now is to keep these students in the regular classroom doing the regular assignments, with accommodations, as much as possible. With a small lab set of Chromebooks this can be more easily accomplished.
