My Students

As a child I loved to collect rocks and this continues to this day. I want my students to learn about rocks and minerals and develop an appreciation and knowledge of how rocks and minerals impact our daily lives. So would you help with this?

My students are located in a rural agricultural county in southern Ohio.

They have a strong work ethic and families consider education a priority. However my students do not have experiences such as visiting museums where there would be a wide range of rock and minerals. Nor can the minerals needed be found in the area where we live. Students come to school without pencils, folders, crayon, etc. So at the beginning of the school year I purchase these items or volunteer at various organizations such as "Crayons to Computers" to get the basics for my students. The school budget does not allow for expensive science lab materials. In other words my students attend a school with extremely limited financial funds.

My Project

My students need the various special property mineral collections, a mineral dvd, and a pocket blacklight in order to study the minerals during a hands-on laboratory activity instead of just textbook pictures. Students will use these materials to learn about the properties of minerals and how our society uses them in our daily lives. These materials will actually complete my rock and mineral sets needed for 6th grade Earth Science. I will use these materials for hands-on activities such as creating a dichotomous keys, researching a specific mineral and researching what careers are associated with rocks and minerals. These materials will encourage students to go outside into their natural world to explore rocks/minerals located in their area of the world. They will learn about the uses of minerals in our daily lives.

I want my Appalachian students to have similar educational materials as the "richer" school districts.

My students need this in order to attain a career so they can compete for better paying jobs or work towards getting into colleges.
