My Students

According to Mahatma Gandhi, "Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever." My students all possess strengths. As an educator it is my job to identify the strengths and use them as a springboard for future educational opportunities and attain academic success.

My students are all unique and possess strengths and challenges.

The Special Education class in Southern California is composed of three grades (3, 4, and 5) with students that have been identified as autistic. Many of the students do not receive academic support at home and the home language is Spanish. Largely Hispanic, the student population is located in a high poverty area with the parent population possessing limited education and struggling to provide an appropriate quality of life with essentials for healthy living. The school is a large Title I school with a student population of approximately 800, and 100% of the families qualifying for free and reduced lunches because of limited income. Additionally, the majority of students are provided transportation to the site. Despite the challenges, the students remain optimistic, positive, and look forward to participating in class that is respectful, reciprocal, and constantly evolving to provide an inclusive education.

My Project

The class is new to the site and the room currently has limited supplies requiring the benefit of donors. The provision of a rug, bins, and chair organizers will provide students with varied opportunities to integrate structure into the daily school day. Additionally, the supplies will present a visual image that represents an environment that welcomes the students to participate and engage in the curriculum. Similarly, the new items will stimulate motivation and confidence for the students. Autistic students benefit from structure to establish clear guidelines for achieving academic success through consistency. The students will be able to access reading materials by the benefit of the constructing a classroom library organized with bins to identify reading levels, and comfortable rug to encourage literacy. It is my hope to encourage life-long learners by sharing a collective love for reading and literacy development.

I anticipate a profound impact that these supplies will have on my students.

As we build our classroom community, the establishment of a safe and positive environment is an integral part of the process. The students deserve and require an environment that encourages and supports opportunities for learning exclusive of disability, gender, or socioeconomic status. I am hopeful by the provision of supplies my students will start their new school year on the path to become prepared for the global market.
