Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am an adaptive physical education teacher at in East Harlem, NY. My school is part of District 75 within the New York City Board of Education. District 75 provides citywide educational, vocational, and behavior support programs for students who are on the autism spectrum, have significant cognitive delays, are severely emotionally challenged, are sensory impaired, and/or have multiple disabilities.

Temple Grandin once said, "There needs to be more emphasis on what a child can do instead of what he cannot do." That is our focus here and that is what we strive for every single day.

Most of our students come from low-income homes, various backgrounds, and ethnicities, and have all different types of abilities and needs. That is why it is so important for these students to be exposed to new things and different experiences. This is what Temple Grandin said was the most important thing people did for her. That is what we are trying to do here at our school.

My Project

Most of the physical education equipment in our school is old, torn, and broken. Despite the ancient equipment, the students love coming into the gym to learn and be physically active. If they love the old equipment, imagine how happy they would be coming in and using new equipment!

Physical Education in our school focuses on leading healthy lifestyles through exercise and physical activity with an emphasis on team sports.

Team sports help to develop communication, leadership, decision making, and time management skills, along with many other skills. The majority of our students are on the autism spectrum, so it is the social and communication aspect of team sports that benefit them the most.

The equipment I have selected specifically meets the needs of our students while much of the equipment we have now does not. The "super-safe" volleyballs and soccer balls I have requested are perfect for our students. They allow them to learn, have fun, and most important be safe. The beach balls and foam balls are excellent for skill building and lead up activities in a multitude of sports. As I mentioned earlier, most of the equipment in our school is broken, and that includes a majority of our hockey sticks. The students LOVE to play hockey and they would benefit greatly from a new set of hockey sticks. Not only will this equipment improve their school lives, but they will be able to transfer their skills and use them in the real world to help maintain a healthy, fun lifestyle.
