My Students

My students are survivors. The long term effects of children, without in-person schools and desperate families lacking sufficient resources has created a student body that requires educators to step up and be so much more for children than just teachers.

This year, I have seen more students affected by trauma than ever; the number of foster children, children living in shelters, and children affected inside and out of the womb by drugs and alcohol in my school has skyrocketed making it more and more difficult to create interventions and specialized instruction to meet their needs.

In fact, this year, one of our students is so severely impacted, that he wasn't even able to successfully function at the local shelter for children that accepts students who have been unsuccessful in local foster homes. Luckily one of our paraprofessionals recently became his foster mom. Now this student can maintain his current school placement where he is loved and thrives. Educators are stepping up and into roles that they have never had to fill before.

This is the level of need we are seeing in our school this year, so much higher than ever before, reaching much beyond our wildest expectations.

My Project

As the School Psychologist, I work with many students every day who have social and emotional needs that necessitate them needing Sensory breaks throughout the day. I have been tasked this year to work more one and one and in small groups with students when the classroom environment has become too overwhelming for them or when they need movement breaks.

I am requesting life-sized games, to give my team more movement-based options to utilize when working with students who need sensory breaks or other ways to incorporate movement into their day.

I see groups of students at lunch that need help learning how to build relationships with other students. My work with students often also includes parents coming into the school to learn more positive ways of interacting with their children. Since I am bilingual, oftentimes, these families are only Spanish-speaking. Many of these students are also in Special Education or have some type of Health Impairment, such as ADHD, PTSD, or FAS. I also work with students with Autism or a Traumatic Brain Injury that necessitates more one on one attention and specialized instruction. I am just one part of a small team of educators, including teachers, counselors, paraprofessionals, social workers and administrators that makes each of these students and families more successful within our school community.

I am also requesting smaller games to utilize for lunch time groups to foster healthy interaction between students that struggle with social skills and small sensory toys to use for positive reinforcements for our students to encourage them towards changing unwanted behaviors. Oftentimes students need motivation as they work on becoming better, healthier versions socially, emotionally and academially of themselves.
