Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Do you know how to button your shirt? Can you brush your teeth? Are you able to accurately follow a recipe? Can you imagine what your life would be like if you never learned to do these things? My students don't have to imagine this, because they live it every day.

My students are 7th and 8th graders between the ages of 12 and 14 & have severe physical, health, & cognitive disabilities.

Half of my students are wheelchair-bound and the other half have some form of autism. They are taught in a special education classroom (multiple disabilities support) because they have very specific needs that cannot be met in a general education classroom. About 90% of our day is spent working on life skills goals; because of their severe cognitive and/or physical delays, they have yet to learn some of the basic skills for living that most of us learned as small children. They are also being immersed in an international awareness curriculum, which they are being exposed to through international dishes & food preparation.

My Project

The materials I'm requesting will be a great help in teaching my students the skills that will assist them in their daily lives. My students are currently learning how to recognize and react to different safety signs they see in the community. They are learning what a stop sign means & what they should do when they see one. The Safety Sign set will be a great addition to our safety signs curriculum, while the Shape & Color Bingo game is a fun way to teach my students to recognize colors & shapes; mastering their shapes and colors will also assist them in learning the safety signs. In addition, my students are learning personal maintenance & hygiene skills. With the help of the Life Skills Puzzle Set & the Button/Zipper Vest, they will learn these skills at a level that is most appropriate for their cognitive abilities. As for our international component, the international cookbook will assist me in exposing my students to international dishes, as well as basic cooking skills.

In spite of their disabilities, my students work hard every day to develop the skills they need to become functioning members of our society.

By donating to this project, you will help a group of middle school students with special needs realize their goal of becoming proficient in the basic, yet crucial, life skills that we often take for granted.
