My Students

Help my children access resources they need to reach their learning goals. Our class needs books to make connections to the real world.

My class consists of twenty, first grade students who are socioeconomically disadvantaged and almost half of them have severe special needs.

They come from many different racial backgrounds and most of their parents did not graduate from high school. Despite their situations, they are hard working, grateful for their opportunities, and they set high academic goals for themselves. They understand the importance of an education and their parents, despite their language and academic barriers, are working hard to make sure they are successful in school.

My Project

We need books to read that connect mathematics to literacy. By including reading in our math lesson, the students will be able to make real life applications to their learning goals. The literature will also assist them in developing their higher order thinking skills in mathematics. By teaching across the curriculum, I will be able to maximize their learning. It is so important they receive the best instruction and curriculum due to their low proficiency level in reading and math.

Books are a huge component to developing prior knowledge, making real life applications, and developing their thinking and problem solving skills.

My students need these books to develop these skills and meet their learning goals. They do not have the access to literature in their home or our classroom. These books will tremendously change the quality of instruction my students will receive.
