My Students

My special needs students do not begin to have the opportunities that students from wealthier areas are fortunate to experience on a regular basis. However, they love to come to school where they have the opportunity to learn and experience activities and materials not available to them at home.

I teach special needs preschoolers with varying disabilities in an area that is socio-economically disadvantaged.

Most live in small apartments with their extended families. Neither the school district nor the parents have money to contribute to my program which requires a lot of consumables, manipulatives, and hands on activities through which the children learn. Their disabilities include speech and language impairments, autism, mental retardation, and developmental delays.

My Project

I am requesting furniture and realistic props (food, appliances, etc) for my kitchen area. I believe a well-furnished kitchen enables students to develop language and vocabulary through the ability to create their own meals. They will get practice in counting, colors, measuring, and working cooperatively with peers. It will also help develop skills which they may use at home while helping set the table, cook in the kitchen, or find groceries in the store. The classroom kitchen creates skills which are applied to daily living.

This is an important project as it supports children's development across cognitive, language, social/emotional, and fine/gross motor domains of learning.

Funding this project will enable the children to have a few appliances found in most kitchens, food props from the four food groups, and a utensils.
