Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from various backgrounds in Los Angeles. All are under the age of five years old and have been diagnosed with a qualifying disability. Each student has an individualized education plan which will help them with their long-term school careers.

My classroom employs the Reggio Emilia approach to student learning.

This approach emphasizes the environment as the third teacher. This means that I, as one of the other teachers, set up the classroom environment with special attention to student interests, connections to nature, and their unique developmental needs. I work to provide opportunities and invitations for exploration and learning while maintaining respect for the whole child as a growing and capable individual.

My Project

These materials will help my young learners explore and engage with foundational learning concepts such as alphabet knowledge, phonemic awareness, pre-writing skills, reading, listening, and speaking. These foundational learning concepts are important building blocks for their futures in elementary school and beyond. Children will engage with materials that will help them learn how to read, communicate ideas, and describe wants and needs while at the same time, helping them to build the confidence needed for them to succeed in the future. Through hands-on experiences, students gain a closer connection to their learning and development, this is important for all young learners but it is especially important for young learners with special needs.
