My Students

I am an art teacher in a self contained special education school. All my students face the challenges of single or multiple handicaps. Art is their fun outlet,it is one subject in which they can actually flourish and excel. Some of my students cannot read, write or verbalize but they can create art.

My students need special materials in order to experience art to its fullest.

Art seems to be the favorite subject of many, I get hugs and high-fives whenever I am seen in the hallways. Art helps them to come alive and create, it enhances their self-confidence. We need art materials in order to continue creating and having fun along the way. I teach the entire school, I see 200 students each week. We need a lot of art materials.

My Project

I am requesting two types of materials. First, I am requesting Artists DVDs, which will help us to learn about various artists. Many of my students are visual learners and this will provide them with the visuals that they need. They love to hear about artists and the lives, experiences and what inspired them to create. Second, I am requesting canvas for painting. June 2010, we presented our first annual "Gallery Exhibit", we invited prominent politicians and figures in the community sold artwork, calendars and note cards featuring original artwork. It was a success and we were able to raise over one thousand dollars towards art supplies.

Our art classes and projects are very important because they are a vital part of my students' learning and achievement.

Some of my students are not able to express themselves in any other form, they may not be able to read, write or verbalize but they can create amazing art work. Art brings happiness, self-confidence, achievement to their academic lives. Creating art and having these art gallery shows helps them to feel good about themselves. We were on the cover of the local paper.
