My Students

My special needs students love arts and crafts, but because of challenges with fine motor skills and perception, participating in even a simple activity can be frustrating.

The students that will participate in this project are elementary school age and diagnosed with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, and learning disabilities.

These students are hard workers and they want to learn, which is exciting, and they are super excited about this project.

My Project

In this project the students will be learning about animals and letters. I will use multi-sensory approaches to teach the students. For example, when teaching letters, I will use gym tape to form the letters on the floor of the classroom so the students can walk the form of each letter. We will also use strips of colored duct tape to form letters on different types of paper and fabric. Each child will pick their favorite animal, practice forming that letter of the alphabet, and will complete a multisensory paint project with the animal and letter on it.

Arts and crafts projects teach a child that they can learn and they can work independently, which improves self-confidence, fine-motor skills, and attention to task.

I look forward to my students having the opportunity to have fun while learning. We need gym, duct, and paint tape to form letters and make stencils for paint projects. We also need paints, so that the students can create paintings of animals and letters, which will carry over the concept that each animal starts with a letter.
