My Students

My special needs students are in high school now, and we are working on independent living skills. My students have a variety of learning levels, including autism, learning disabilities, and lower-functioning students with mental disabilities. My classroom is designed to be a studio apartment in order to teach daily living skills. My students will be learning about the responsibilities that each of us have in our daily lives, and we will also learn how we will balance our work time and our leisure time.

My Project

My high school students will be weaving yarn into hats to wear and share. These kits are created by the antibullying campaign #HatNotHate. Each kit makes two hats and includes the loom and loom hook. The kit has yarn for two hats and the loom can be used again with any yarn.

The easy to use loom will help students to develop fine motor skills and students will build self-esteem by making their own hat to wear.

The students will choose who to donate the second hat to, whether it's a family member or a staff member at school that the student would like to thank for being kind and helpful to them.
