My Students

My students are rich in diversity: I work with students who were born in other countries and speak other languages, students who struggle with poverty and a lack of opportunities, students with a variety of special needs, students who range in age from 4-11, and a wide range of interests and abilities. The one thing that everyone shares is a love of movement!

What they lack are opportunities.

Students with special needs often have difficulty finding team sports that they can be a meaningful part of. This is why our unified sports team is such a wonderful and valuable program for all of our team members, with and without special needs. But budget cuts have severely impacted equipment purchases.

My Project

Special Olympics Unified Sports is a big deal in Middletown! All of our elementary schools compete together in a city-wide community field day. We compete in many different sports, including track and field. We practice for weeks with our team. It is a wonderful opportunity for students with disabilities to build relationships with their typical peers.

Nearly all of our athletes' favorite event is the javelin throw.

But we don't have any javelins to practice with. We have been using pool noodles. It is not even close to a good substitute. If we had official safe practice javelins to work with, our athletes would be much more successful in building skills.
