My Project

Research shows that a balance of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation has a huge impact on our daily productivity and performance in the workforce.

The same is true when we are working with young children every day- the prospect of earning an incentive is universally thrilling.

When students learn that they will be rewarded for putting in extra effort, student engagement increases dramatically, especially with students who otherwise remain unengaged in lessons.

The items requested in this project will be given to our students from ETK-6th grades for meeting their individual set goals and class goals in ST Math participation. Each class and individual student has received a goal-setting poster, allowing them to visually see their monthly progression by coloring in the barometer. We also will have monthly announcements to congratulate the class that has GAINED the largest amount percentage during each month, NOT the overall percentage shaded on the barometer. This approach allows us to avoid hyper fixation on numbers and comparison that typically accompanies competition, instead framing the competition through the lens of the much healthier growth mindset. [For example, if one class has 30% of the barometer shaded at the end of September, but moved from 1/10th to 3/10ths within the span of one month (20% gained), they will win the prize over a class that has shaded 5/10ths of the barometer, but only moved from 40% to 50% (only 10% gained)]

At the end of each month, the students of the class with the biggest growth win a specific prize for the month. With your help, I can encourage my students to take an active role in their education by providing them with fun, nonrepetitive prize incentives.
