My Project

My classroom is a life skills class where my students are exposed to working in several different areas of life. We cook, we clean, we do laundry, we sew, and we do basic construction. Recently, I had the idea to build a coffee bar for another school in our district, and my students were able to measure, cut, drill, glue, and assemble this custom-built coffee bar. After this opportunity, many of my students wanted to continue doing these kinds of projects, and they got together and decided they wanted to build an Adirondack chair for the classroom. My plan for this project is to really let them take ownership over the entire process and emphasize that they are not just borrowing my tools but that these tools are theirs for as long as they are in the classroom.

My students are all receiving Special Education services, and I am passionate about empowering them to understand that their cognitive disability does not and will not inhibit them from taking ownership over their lives.

This is done by removing the mystique surrounding the things that they enjoy in life. Can't find a chair that fits your life, living space, or special needs? You can make it. There's not a restaurant nearby that serves your favorite food? You can cook it. Got blood or paint on your nicest shirt? You can clean it.

This project is simply one piece of a puzzle that is empowering students on the precipice of young adulthood that they can do and be whatever they want in this life, and I would love for you to partner alongside us on this journey.
