Hi, I am the special education teacher in a kindergarten grade inclusion class. My class consists of students who have a range of disabilities. Some of these children show delays in the areas of speech and motor skills. We are a Title I, early-childhood center. I am asking for artistic materials such as different colors of dough and tools to manipulate it, construction paper, and glue sticks. Playing with these materials can be very beneficial to my students with disabilities. Some children in my class have delays in their fine motor skills. Their tiny hands have not gained enough strength to complete certain tasks such as holding a pencil or crayon and writing clearly. By playing with the dough or using a glue stick, they are working on building the muscles in their hands so that they will soon be able to button their own coat or tie their own shoe laces. This donation would also benefit my students who have speech delays. Some of these children are very quiet and do not feel comfortable speaking. I am hoping that allowing them to create models out of dough and experimentation with paper and glue sticks would foster an opportunity for these students to express themselves in a different way or even talk about what they have done. A donation of the artistic materials could create a wonderful and fun opportunity to help my students with special needs. Thank you.
