Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Work hard! Work Smart! Stay Focused!" is how we begin the day. My students are eager to reach their set goals. By the end of the school year, I'd love to see them reading on grade level. My biggest challenge is phonemic awareness, spelling, and reading. "Reading takes your mind on a journey!"

My students are smart, funny, caring and have a desire to reach their goals.

Creativity flows through my classroom. Our class contains general and special education students. My students come from the Housing Projects in the surrounding neighborhood and have a desire to see the world around them. Our school is a small and family oriented community where teachers and administration have a strong desire to see our students succeed. In our small learning community, we work hand and hand to engage our students in the learning process while encouraging them to never give up. Unfortunately we don't have access to all the resources that would greatly support our scholars in the learning process but every educator pools together their resources to do the best that we can. Our vision is to see our scholars reach their fullest potential.

My Project

I am requesting 4 iPads with 4 durable cases to help them with phonemic awareness, vocabulary building and writing skills. Close your eyes and imagine students acquiring foundational skills that will bring them closer to their reading goals. Many of my students are below grade level in reading due to learning disabilities and some have language barriers. Students will engage in a range of reading, vocabulary, and phonics activities on their iPad minis during their pull out and push in services. They will have an opportunity to read books and write summaries on an app downloaded to the iPad mini. Students will also be able to work on vocabulary building activities daily where they learn the words and use them in sentences. Students will also be able to acquire fluency skills while listening to stories, hearing the letter sounds, and hearing the pronunciation of high frequency words/sight words. By the end of the year, my students will learn how to read with fluency and expression. They will be able to read books on the 4th grade reading level because of their increased vocabulary and phonics skills.

iPad minis with durable cases will improve my students' ability to read grade level text and participate fully in classroom discussions.

Helping to improve my students' phonemic awareness, spelling and reading will assist in building their confidence as well as encourage them to keep pushing towards their goals. A whole new world will open up when my students are finally able to comprehend what they read. It will put success in reading within their reach.
