My Students

I am a Special Education teacher in a resource classroom. My students have special learning needs, including support with reading, writing, math, attention and behavior. They come to my classroom to get individualized instruction to meet their needs and encourage skill development that maximizes their time in their general education environments. These students tend to have needs for extra visuals to support learning and sensory input to support emotional regulation. Some students need sensory breaks, in which they can get out some anxious energy that might distract from learning. I love figuring out what works for each student's brain and learning style.

My students have a wide range of academic and social skill development.

The kindergarten students are working on ready to learn behaviors, handwriting, phonics, and number awareness. First grade students are building problem solving and writing ability. Second grade students are beginning to become more fluent with math facts and reading, as well as developing paragraphs. Individual and small group work helps develop independence. It makes me feel so special when I have a student say how much they love coming to writing group or how they enjoy a math tool that I taught them.

My Project

These materials will help engage students in learning by providing functional visual room dividers to increase attention/engagement and limit distractions. The whiteboard writing surface is essential for the table at the center of the room to provide visual instruction and models. Writing group will appreciate having a word wall for spelling easily accessible at their table. iPads provide access to hands-on learning programs for reading (audio books), keyboarding, and writing.

My students love to move, touch, and play.

Sensory tools will give them more choices for cash outs and movement breaks. Water beads, magnetic tiles, and other sensory items provide variety to fit every personality and mood. We use the Zones of Regulation and need tools to offer students that will help their physical and mental energy stay focused and efficient. Visual timers provide cues for students to manage time and anticipate transitions.
