My Students

My special education preschoolers go beyond amazing! I have a classroom of 3-5 year olds who have a range of disabilities going from mild to severe. Some have speech and language impairments, some have autism, some have Down Syndrome and some have developmental delay. No matter the disability, one of the things they have in common is loving preschool.

My students are also the teachers.

Even though I run a program which heavily emphasizes language and social skills, the students learn from each other. The majority of language a non-verbal student learns is from playing cooperatively with a verbal peer. The student who is more challenged in appropriate social skills and behavior learns from watching his/her peers model appropriate interactions.

While some days can be more challenging than others, the students typically leave school having learned something they likely did not know prior to arrival. Or, they have taken a skill they know to a higher level. My school is located in an area where families are not well off socio-economically, however, my classroom gives them opportunities they would not have at home.

My Project

Current research indicates that iPads are an effective tool to support language and early literacy development. It is also another means of offering positive behavior reinforcement. I want this requested Apple iPad for students to use during small group centers. It will also be used for one-on-one communication and behavior support.

In today's classroom, technology plays a significant role in getting our students ready for 21st-century tasks.

A new iPad will facilitate my students' development across several developmental domains, therefore preparing them for success in their academic and personal endeavors.

An iPad is a highly engaging tool for a student to use. It is also a great motivator for students to know that when they finish their work, they will get time on the iPad as a reward for doing their jobs at school.
