My Students

The amount of growth that takes place in my classroom daily is unmeasurable. Every one of my students are dealt a different hand in life. Some are non-verbal, non-mobile and/or intellectually impaired. This class teachers them the game of life and how to be an active member in the community!

My students have moderate to severe special education abilities.

The abilities of my students range from cerebral palsy, blind, low-cognitive development, epilepsy, Down Syndrome, Autism, deaf and hard-of-hearing. Special education students are allowed to attend high school until the age of 22. Once they turn 22 they are sent on their own either in a group home, assisted living, or fully independent. Each student comes from a unique background some in which are better than others. The class dynamics is a sight to see. The students genuinely enjoy learning about an adult life and what they may encounter. They have learned how to cook simple breakfast and lunches with verbal and physical prompts from classroom aides and myself. With assistance they go out in the community and volunteer at various work sites in the community and are slowly creating a school spirit student store to provide ways in which they would need to learn how to communicate with the general public.

My Project

Unfortunately, special education is not given textbooks to assist the teachers. My curriculum is ALL teacher-created and can rarely be duplicated year-after-year. Our class consist of two working who do not have the ability to print. Being that we often use google docs, develop numerous research skills (bus schedules, job opportunities, recipes...) our students are unable to work in a small group environment using these technologies. Our hope is to utilize the Kindle Fires in group settings, while being able to print using the wireless printer we recently purchased.

The donations to this project will give ALL students the ability to utilize the technology they need to learn how to use for the future, while also providing textbook material to their desk.
