My students live in a socio-economically disadvantaged Polynesian community. I have six precious and severely disabled students. All of them are non-verbal and all of them are treasures to their families and to our school. I am new to the school this year and I am the 7th teacher in 8 years in this classroom.
My students have severe disabilities.
All are nonverbal, two are in wheelchairs, two have hearing aids, one has a tracheotomy, one is tube fed, and two are too medically fragile to come to school.
My Project
My classroom for students with severe disabilities needs to be clean and have a variety of supplies to help the students learn social skills and life skills. Because some of my students are medically fragile we go through basic cleaning supplies really fast.
We need hand sanitizer (we change diapers) and sanitizing wipes to wipe down toys, desks, changing tables, wheelchairs, etc.
We need "baby" wipes to clean little hands that can't get to the sink. We need tissues for runny noses and something to kill the huge cockroaches that love our classroom. (We can't use the spray because of fragile lungs.) I continue to gather educational games and resources to support my students' educational and social progress. We are also hoping for some craft items to make gifts for the students' families. And, we still need something to store the supplies for our students (medical supplies, sensory gadgets, feeding supplies, data collection forms, etc.)
The items I hope to add to the classroom will increase order in the classroom, provide basic educational opportunities, and help keep the students healthy.
A couple businesses and people have helped support my students already. Their generosity has been so deeply appreciated. When we get new donations for our classroom, we adults (nurses, therapists, educational assistants, autism support personnel, etc.) get so happy for our students. It is a really big deal for us. Any support that you can offer will be appreciated and put to good use!
