Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a self-contained classroom in the Bronx. My students are extremely special and they have multiple special needs. My class is a Kindergarten, First and Second grade class with students that are Autistic and Emotionally Disturbed. I have students from many different backgrounds and learning styles. My students have extreme behaviors such as hitting, throwing chairs, knocking over tables, and screaming. They have many special needs that aren't addressed in the regular education classroom. They are lovable, friendly, inquisitive and hard-working children that need a high-level of engagement to learn at their best! My school is a new school so there is no funding to buy extras items that we may need. The money we have is being spent on buying furniture and books.

My Project

I am requesting cars and puzzles. These are the two things that my Autistic and Emotionally Disturbed love most. The class I teach is very challenging but also warm and loving. I want to create an environment that works for them. Many times thought the day, my students are screaming and throwing chairs because the work is so tough for them. I would like my students to be able to choose a puzzle or cars which they love during center time. For many of the children this is the first experience in a public school classroom. Many children do not have puzzles or cars to play with at home. These puzzles and cars would put a smile of my students' faces.
