My Students

Every day I work with each student to achieve individual goals in daily living skills: eating, mobility, grooming, dressing, communication, socialization, vocational and academics. We work in groups and individually to help them achieve their greatest level of independence possible.

My students are each amazing individuals with unique personalities just like kids in general education.

They are all severely intellectually disabled with additional physical handicaps. They are all non-verbal and in wheelchairs. They each have other physical and health impairments, too. They take pride in learning new skills and love making and having friends. They are truly the "rock stars" of our school. We encourage the general population to visit our room to socialize and work with our special population. I have a waiting list of kids who want to be morning and afternoon peer helpers. General education students who aren't on the helper schedule still find a way to visit my students in the halls, at recess, in PE or music and at lunch. My students are nonverbal and in wheelchairs yet they find ways to communicate with their friends. They smile, they reach for their friends' hands, they play simple games, they listen to stories, and they watch their friends perform silly acts for them.

My Project

When most people encounter my students for the first time, they want to do everything for them. As they get to know them, they realize the importance of allowing my students to do for themselves. The materials I am requesting will allow me to work individually with my students on both new and emerging skills to allow them more independence. They are all very social and easily distracted. These whiteboards and the divider will allow me to set up a section in the classroom where their focus will have to be placed entirely on the task at hand. Using the carts, I will also be able to keep the needed materials in the work area. We will work on leisure skills and communication so they can better engage with their general education peers. We will work on tasks like dressing, feeding and grooming so they can take pride in themselves and have more self-respect. We will work on pre-vocational skills so one day they may hold a job. We will also work on academics so they can learn an adapted version of their peers' curriculum.

I have one essential question hanging all year in my classroom: "What can I do to become more independent?" I have spent the past four years teaching independence to my students but the donations of these materials will improve the speed and accuracy with which my students can achieve independence in many areas of their lives.

Each time my students master another skill they become more independent and achieve more self-pride.
