My Students

When my students come to me, they have not yet had many opportunities for success in English. Because of this, they require high-interest books with themes they can relate to. However, our school book room is lacking in materials that are at appropriate instructional and interest levels.

I teach a self-contained special education English class for ninth graders.

The students in my class are unique, inquisitive and gregarious, but they also lack confidence in reading. Many of them come into this school, which is an urban, high-need school, 3-5 grade levels behind in reading comprehension and vocabulary. Because of their deficits, most of my students come into ninth grade without ever having read a novel. They really appreciate the opportunity to spend a long time breaking down, analyzing, and discussing a grade level text. When my students are able to comprehend a text and understand how it relates to the outside world, they become legitimately excited, going out of their way to talk to me about the book at lunch and after school. Although my students are academically behind the rest of the ninth grade, they are entirely capable of succeeding in high school, with the help of the right resources.

My Project

This year, with the help of a grant, my students each received their own copies of Elie Wiesel's Night. At first, they were intimidated by the difficult language and writing style, but eventually they gained confidence and became very emotionally involved. However, as my students were able to keep their copies of Night, my new students for the 2010-2011 school year would need a donation in order to experience the book. By working through Night as a class, my students would have the opportunity to explore more complicated literary elements such as foreshadowing, symbolism, imagery, and syntax. They would learn that there is more to a book than simply “what happened.” Furthermore, they would develop a detailed understanding of the Holocaust. Many of my students come in with no idea that the Holocaust ever occurred. They would also have a chance to investigate areas of psychology that apply to the Holocaust, such as the bystander effect and the ways that people respond to authority.

By donating to this project, you would be giving my students the opportunity to gain literary analysis skills that are essential for success in high school and in college.

You would be giving each of them their own book that they would be able to write in and keep. You would be providing them with a greater understanding of the human condition and the world outside of their city. Most importantly, you would be providing a tool that will significantly raise each child's academic confidence.
