My Students

As the school year approaches, I need to enhance my counseling curriculum to support students in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis. This year, I will be working hard to make my curriculum remote-friendly and easily accessible. I want to send my students care packages of items they will need to participate in counseling sessions from home.

I work with my counseling students to develop the tools to engage in the hard and vulnerable work of exploring what makes them happy, what troubles them most, and how to tap into their strongest selves.

Day in and day out, I am privileged to witness some of the most beautiful acts of emotional bravery in young children. From five-year-olds learning to advocate for themselves and others, to ten-year-olds practicing the hard work of self reflection, righting wrongs and building a more just community.

At EVCS, our goal is for our students to be confident, kind, and ready to contribute towards positive social change in the community and world around them.

My Project

Students will be receiving their counseling service with me remotely this school year. My hope is to personally deliver a tote bag of supplies to each student on my caseload. With these supplies, students will be fully prepared for our session each week simply by remembering to have their tote bag by their side!

Individual tote bags will include: laminated "I Know What to Do Cards" for support with taking control of feelings/emotions; "People Colors" pencils (12 natural-looking skin tones that allow children to make realistic self-portraits and characters); markers; journals and stickers.

This will allow for consistent materials across my caseload, while also taking the burden off parents to scrounge for preferred materials before sessions.

We will decorate our tote bags together during one of our beginning sessions. This shared activity will help ground students in our work and our relationship as we surge forward in this challenging context.
