Special Arts and Special Needs

My students need art and sensory-art materials such as sketchbooks, drawing boards, noise reducing and sensory fidgets to create and remain focused when creating art.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Golding's classroom raised $705

This project is fully funded

My Students

I teach visual arts, k-2 in, a special needs school, for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. A day in the art room revolves around differentiation and structure to try to meet the needs of over 40 students. I would like to enrich the art room with tools and materials that can be adaptable.

Our students on the spectrum have varying needs.

Learning styles differ from one student to another. As a result throughout the school day, students experience learning in structured, yet engaging multi-modal ways. Especially in the arts, our students create drawings, paintings, murals, costumes, set designs and even put on performances to share ideas and stories about how they see the world around.

My Project

The art room is like a production house, where ideas are constantly being generated and materials are always running low! Our classroom needs materials for students to keep learning about the world around them through art in exciting and new ways. For example I envision using the dry erase boards with my nonverbal students who show amazing ideas in drawings and illustrations. And the fidgets for students who enjoy watching their peers perform but need a little help keeping calm while they wait for their turns. The classroom also needs other resources such as laminating sheets and paper so that teacher created adapted learning tools can be made to help all learners access concepts being taught in meaningful ways.

Donations to this project will make a difference in the lives of students with ASD, who are continuing to learn more about themselves and the world around them through the arts one day at a time.
