My Students

I am an art teacher in a self-contained, special needs school. My students learn in various ways. Since funding is limited, it is difficult to buy clay and other materials. Clay happens to be a medium that all my students can create with, especially the ones with limited mobility.

My students are all special needs: cerebral palsy, autism, blindness and other various mental and physical disabilities.

Sometimes, clay and other 3 D materials are easier to work with for some of my students. Some do not speak, read or write, but they love to express themselves through their art! My classroom is a place where we create self-esteem and confidence. There is nothing shining brighter that their faces when they create a special work of art. Our school holds an annual Art Exhibit every spring where we invite families and members of our community to come and share in our creative output. Our local newspaper covers many of our exhibits. Most recently a local art gallery, The National Art League in Douglaston, generously donated their entire gallery to my students, for several weeks, in order to expose their work to the general public. Our school is a self-contained, special needs school, we have about 170 students who all enjoy art.

My Project

Due to budget cuts, it is difficult to attain these materials. Through the years, with the help of the generous contributors of Donors Choose, my students have all been able to experience art. Clay is expensive. Some of my students cannot hold a pencil or paintbrush, but they can shape clay and create a masterpiece! With the clay and the paper mache, my students will be able to experience art through their sense of touch. Several of my students are blind or losing their eyesight, drawing is not an option. Clay is a good medium for several disabilities, it helps to differentiate my lessons and give all my students an equal chance to create something they are proud of. It helps them to express themselves and an outlet for their creative thoughts. I requested basket making materials for those who might be allergic to the clay or paper mache; I want them to experience making art with their hands as well. The linoleum is helpful to create block prints, so some students can do printmaking.

With the donation of these materials, all my students will experience art equally no matter what their disability is.

So many times the students with the most severe disabilities miss out on the full enriching art experience due to lack of various art materials in the classroom. This is your chance to help my students reap the full benefits of the art experience, no matter what their disability.
