My Students

Every child is a unique individual with many talents and gifts. Our special education classroom embraces this idea whole-heartedly and would like to prepare an environment that allows each student to shine to their fullest potential.

My students have been identified as being special and they truly are.

Their varying challenges make learning in an average classroom very difficult if not impossible. They need specialized attention to meet their academic and social goals and a calm, relaxing environment is an essential component to doing this. Behavior is a form of communication and just as we focus our energies on teaching them how to read and write, we also need to teach them appropriate ways to interact with others and help them learn socially acceptable ways to deal with their emotions.

My Project

I believe in being a proactive educator. I want to instill self-management skills in each of my students so that they will become independent life-long learners. Sometimes, this requires materials that are not readily available in a public school setting. My vision is to create a dedicated place in my classroom for students to relax, calm down, and refocus their energy appropriately. For the visual child,I have requested a new, inviting rug with peaceful images printed on it. For the auditory child, I would like to provide soothing nature sounds that they may not hear in their urban lives. For the kinesthetic child, I would like to offer a variety of tactile based manipulatives. For the anxious child, I would like to provide stress balls and fidgets that will help them stay calm. These materials will allow my students to better focus on their school work without being overly distracting to themselves or others.

If funded, this project will go a long way in creating pathways for each of my students to be successful no matter what their individual challenges may be.

Special educators, like all educators, must often think outside the box to assist their students reach their goals. I am very excited about this project and hope you will be too.
