My Students

I teach middle level students who are learning English as a new language. The majority come from the Philippines and the island nations of Micronesia. They need language support to be successful in their regular classes, as well as navigating their new environment.

I believe that language learners learn best through peer collaboration with hands-on, visual learning opportunities.

I aim to provide students a lot of opportunities to interact with the core content they are learning. I also strongly believe in arts-integration as a powerful tool for learning.

My Project

My students need to practice all four language domains: speaking, writing, listening, and reading. Reading and writing are easily incorporated into our school day and can also be done independently at home. However, speaking and listening activities will require the use of headphones so students can focus and record themselves speaking for me to review. Speaking is often the lowest language domain on our annual language assessment.

By having their own headset to use at home, students will be able to practice speaking into a microphone.

I will also be able to give them specific feedback, thus strengthening their speaking skills.
