My Students

Reading is incredibly important for students to build vocabulary, study plot, and practice comprehension. Finding the right book isn't always easy, especially with a diverse group of students who want to read something recent and relevant.

My students are a culturally diverse group of ninth and tenth graders living in a high poverty area.

About half of my students are special education students, and many are struggling readers. Despite any challenges they face, they are optimistic about their futures and work hard to accomplish their goals. With the right resources, all students are excited to succeed.

My Project

Novel studies are so important in building vocabulary and comprehension skills. When students are excited and engaged, they don't even realize they are building their reading skills. Providing a relevant and engaging novel will help me get my students excited about reading. I want students to be excited to come to class to read and find out what happens next. I want them to enjoy reading and see value in what they are learning. A novel like Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson will help make that possible. Many students will be able to relate to the main character and major themes.
